German in Coláiste Bríde
The teaching and learning in Coláiste Bríde aims to provide students with the highest standard of German through a comprehensive understanding of the language structure in addition to an in-depth knowledge of Germany’s culture and literature. JUNIOR LEVEL All students study both French and German in 1st year. At the end of 1st year students are free to continue with one foreign language and may choose both if they wish. Students are encouraged to reach a level where they comprehend both aural and written German and can communicate proficiently orally. By the end of third year they will demonstrate a good basic knowledge of German grammar. TRANSITION YEAR In TY student learning is achieved on a very practical level, with particular attention given to project, portfolio and group work. Class work consists of research, debates, discussions and oral presentations. SENIOR LEVEL German at senior level involves students understanding the main elements of the surface meaning of literary texts in German in addition to bringing their written, aural and oral ability to a level of fluency. Students respond to questions based on language material on contemporary aspects of Germanic community life in “Äußerungen” and “Schriftliche Produktionen”, whereby they propose a point of view, express a reaction and display with confidence their knowledge of complex grammatical structures. LANGUAGE ASSISTANTS The German Department in Coláiste Bríde applies every year for a native German speaker and our language assistants have always provided valuable support to students in class. |
