BERLIN TRIP 2012
|
Report by Róisin Ryan
For the last number of years the German department has been running a 4 day cultural trip to Germany for senior students, travelling every second year. The most recent trip took place in December 2012 when a group of us set off to Berlin at 2am on the 3rd of Dec 2012. Day 1: On the first evening we soaked up the snowy atmosphere of the traditional markets and tasted the local cuisine. We were able to walk around the city and take-in the famous “Sehenswürdigkeiten” (sites) such as the Brandenburg Gate and the Reichstag. On day 2 we travelled to the Jewish extermination camp in Sachsenhausen and were brought on a memorable tour of the camp. To lighten the mood when we were finished, we basked on the sand in the indoor beach in ‘My Tropical Island’ Freizeitspark until it was time to go to the Hard Rock Café for dinner that night. Day 3 was spent visiting the various historic sites and places within Berlin such as Checkpoint Charlie, the East Side Gallery (Berlin Wall) and an active atomic bomb shelter. Day 4, our final day, was spent at the beautiful Brandenburg Gate and Unter den Linden, drinking hot chocolate, shopping and soaking up the Christmas atmosphere and at the famous TV tower in Berlin before we left German soil. |
